A Chocolate Lover’s Guide to York

If you’ve got a sweet tooth (or a full-blown chocolate addiction, we don’t judge), then York is basically your spiritual home. Known as the chocolate capital of the UK, York has a rich cocoa-covered history that’s shaped the city in more ways than one. It’s the birthplace of iconic brands like Terry’s, Rowntree’s, and Kit Kat, and today, it’s still full of sweet spots where you can get your fix.

Whether you want to learn about the people behind your favourite treats, dive into a chocolate-making experience, or simply eat your way through York one truffle at a time, this guide is for you!

A (very) brief history of chocolate in York

Before we get to the good stuff (i.e., where to eat), let’s set the scene. York’s chocolate heritage dates back to the 1700s, but it really boomed in the 19th century when Joseph Rowntree and Terry’s of York started making waves.

You’ve probably unwrapped a Terry’s Chocolate Orange on Christmas morning or crunched your way through a Kit Kat - well, both were born right here. At one point, one in every four people in York was employed in the chocolate industry. That’s a lot of cocoa.

While some of the big factories have moved on, York’s passion for chocolate is very much alive, and deliciously well.

Must visit chocolate spots in York

1. York’s Chocolate Story

📍 King’s Square

If you’re new to the city or just want to geek out on chocolate (highly recommended), start at York’s Chocolate Story. This interactive museum-slash-tour takes you on a journey from the rainforest cacao bean to the modern-day chocolate bar.

You’ll learn about the Rowntrees and Terrys, get behind-the-scenes secrets, and even make your own chocolate lolly. And yes, there are plenty of samples along the way. It’s a brilliant option for families, dates, or just treating yourself to a fun afternoon.

👉 Top tip: Book online in advance—tours can fill up, especially on weekends.

2. York Cocoa Works

📍 Castlegate

An indie chocolate factory right in the heart of the city? Yes, please. York Cocoa Works is a bean-to-bar workshop, café, and store rolled into one, and their commitment to craft is seriously impressive.

You can peek at the production process, join a chocolate-making class, or simply kick back with one of their incredible single-origin hot chocolates. Don’t leave without trying their cocoa nib brownies—they’re rich, fudgy, and utterly unforgettable.

3. Choc Affair

📍 Walmgate

Born in York and now stocked across the country, Choc Affair is another must-visit for chocolate lovers. Their Walmgate shop is a treasure trove of handcrafted chocolate bars, hot chocolates, and gift sets.

What we love most? Their bold flavours, think rhubarb and gin, orange and geranium, or salted caramel with actual sea salt flakes. Their ethics are top-notch too: sustainably sourced, palm oil-free, and made in small batches.

4. Monk Bar Chocolatiers

📍 The Shambles

Nestled in the historic Shambles, Monk Bar Chocolatiers is a beloved family-run artisan chocolate shop in York. Renowned for their exquisite luxury handmade chocolates, boasting over 50 varieties, they offer a truly indulgent experience.

A must-try highlight, which has gone viral, is their chocolate shot: warm, melted chocolate served in an edible chocolate cup, a decadent treat perfect for any sweet tooth exploring the city's charming streets.

5. Chocolate & Co

📍 Lowther Street

It's far more than just a café; it's a social enterprise with a heartwarming mission. This popular spot offers a welcoming atmosphere where you can enjoy exceptional coffee, delicious homemade cakes, light brunches, and their highly praised speciality hot chocolates, made with quality Colombian chocolate.

What sets Chocolate & Co apart is its dedication to providing employment and training opportunities for individuals who have faced significant life challenges. They even run a "pay it forward" scheme, allowing customers to buy a drink or meal for someone in need, making every visit a contribution to a positive cause.

6. Hotel Chocolat

📍 Stonegate

This isn’t your standard Hotel Chocolat shop. Their York branch includes the Cocoa café, where you can sip cocoa-inspired cocktails, savour chocolate-themed small plates, or simply tuck into a rich, velvety hot chocolate.

It’s the perfect place to rest your legs after wandering the Shambles!
